OBJECTIVES

The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of Hino Motors Canada (HMC) Woodstock's ISO 14001 and Health and Safety Management Systems; Continuous facilitation of improved H&S workplace conditions, with  a  focus  on  reduction of frequency and severity of workplace injuries, illness, disease and  adverse  environmental  conditions, and ensure HMC is in compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation, regulations, codes and standards. Assist HMC in their Environmental compliance obligations.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and maintain written policies, procedures and instructions, review and update them on an annual basis to ensure compliance with OHSA, WSIB, and ISO 14001.
  • Monitor new and revised legislation and remain current with the latest safety.
  • Provide assistance, counselling and guidance to Team Members and management as required on the interpretation and administration of environmental, health and safety policies.
  • Provide leadership to the Health & Safety Committee. Responsible for all facets of Health & Safety Committee.
  • Review of all accident/ incident investigations and ensure that proper preventative measures are in place.
  • Provide meaningful statistics to management in a timely manner to assist in continued improvement of workplace health and safety, including reports to our stakeholders including HML, where requested.
  • Support work stoppages due to unsafe work.
  • Ensure compliance of plant programs, policies, and procedures with H&S legislation, corporate policy.
  • Ensure availability and relevance of Health & Safety programs.
  • In conjunction with the Human Resources Manager and department Managers, ensuring that all Team Members are properly trained in Health & Safety programs, policy and procedures.
  • Implement Health & Safety programs, policies and standards used by Team Members, Coordinators, and Managers in accordance with legislative and corporate guidelines.
  • Survey the effectiveness of Health & Safety programs in place to ensure that programs are able to meet best in class practices.
  • Provide advice and make recommendations on improving Health & Safety conditions in the workplace through implementing change to existing programs or the requirement of new programs.
  • Maintain Open Door policy and follow up on Team Member concerns in a timely manner.
  • Have a daily presence on the shop floor.
  • Conduct H&S training, including new Team Member orientation, and awareness meetings as needed.
  • Maintaining internal training materials and matrices.
  • Coordinate all environmental and occupational hygiene testing.
  • Provide direction for occupational hygiene concerns and hazardous material management.
  • Ensure that HMC's Safety Rules, Plant Standards and Environmental Guidelines are being followed by all Team Members, including contractors, sub-contractors and other outside parties.
  • Assist Human Resources Manager and Coordinators/Team Members Leader with HMC's modified work, light duties, work hardening, step-up and return to work programs for injured/sick workers under the Return-to-Work Program.
  • Provide the Ministry of Labour/Ministry of Environment with documentation upon request and accompany representative(s) on any plant audit.
  • Actively participate in approval of all new equipment and process design.
  • Create and maintain all Physical Demands analysis and hazard assessments.
  • Maintain all ergonomic assessment information and work with manufacturing related departments to ensure ergonomic assessments and action items are in place.
  • Maintain data and document control for ISO 14001 and health and safety operating system.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Human Resources Manager or designate.
  • Follow the guidelines and rules as set out by the Team Member Handbook and HMC's policies and procedures.
  • Ensure knowledge obtained during training is applied.
  • Ensure all workplace accidents, injuries and/ or illnesses are reported immediately.
  • Ensure any reports of unsafe acts/conditions are investigated immediately.
  • Actively participate in Return-to-Work Program if required.
  • Co-ordinate, and maintain emergency evacuation plan, including drills.
  • Inform the Human Resources Manager of any repairs required to machines or other equipment.
  • Apply good housekeeping standards and maintain work environment in a clean and safe condition, adhering to applicable health and safety issues.
  • Ensure the Human Resources Manager is made aware of any uncertainty you may have regarding the operation of equipment, machine or device prior to beginning work.
  • Support the Mississauga location’s EHS programs as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) to three (3) years previous experience in Health and Safety.
  • Experience in Environmental/ ISO 14001 is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Exceptional presentation and training skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement programs on a plant wide level.

EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Post-Secondary Diploma, Degree or Certificate in Health & Safety.
  • CRST or CRSP designation
  • JHSC Certification Training is an asset.
  • ISO Auditor Training/ certification is an asset.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work schedule is subject to change by Hino Motors Canada, Ltd. as to meet its production needs. The current work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, with the knowledge that we may transition to Monday - Thursday 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM. As the Health & Safety Specialist, you may be requested/required to work more than their regularly scheduled workday hours and shifts from time to time as per Employment Standards Act, 2000 Section 17-"Hours of Work Agreement" and may be "on call" for emergencies.

While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member will work in a manufacturing environment, both office and factory settings. The Team Member is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and moving vehicles within a close proximity.

  • Frequently reach above and below shoulder height.
  • Occasionally lift items weighing 5-20 kilograms.
  • Hands on moving products.
